COLUMBUS DAY

Day Happy Columbus Day!

There will be no U.S. Mail today because of the holiday.

As a matter of fact, we have not had any U.S. Mail here at the Lucky Dog cabins for the last three days (since last Thursday) because of the high water on the road to town.

Below is a photograph of the road at Big Rock Park (local folks know the spot, it is about 5 miles NE of Pineville). This part of the road only gets underwater when the creek gets high enough to back up over the road. The other three crossings are the result of wet-weather streams flowing toward the creek.

The photo on the right is of a waterlogged canoe that had floated from its mooring upstream. We heard that the owners recovered it later in the day.

It’s a good thing we have the computers and internet to keep in touch with our friends and family.

MARILYN PAINTS AGAIN

The other day Marilyn was into painting again. Some time ago, she took a photo of the old P.L. Carnell barn that is located on Dog Hollow Road, north of Pineville. She made an oil painting of the barn a couple of years ago, but gave it away. She decided she missed the painting so she wanted to try again with watercolor. Marilyn Y was kind enough to invite Marilyn over for a “painting day” so off she went.

At the end of the day she had her painting.

I have to admit, she did an excellent job.

FISH FRY

Last night Marilyn and Al left me – Lucky, Brutus and cats to go to a fish fry in town put on by the Christian Men’s Group at the Methodist Church.

Because of the heavy rain in the last couple of days the road to town was impassable because of high water. They had to go the long way over the hill, instead of the normal 7 miles to town, going over the hill meant driving about twice that distance.

When they got to the church, the food was ready, people were in the serving line and eating at tables. That was ok, as it is a “come & go” event. They even have take out.

After Marilyn and Al had a nice dinner, they were ready to get back to the cabin. On their way out of the church, Marilyn pointed out an activity that the Men’s Group is involved with. Rather than duplicate efforts, the men are supporting a food pantry that another church in town has established. Marilyn hopes that their example of good sense will be used in other areas. It is an example of true community fellowship.

They had a good time and it was nice to have them not under my paws for awhile.

LUCKY DOG EXTRA - FLOOD UPDATE

We have had over 6 inches of rain yesterday and this morning. We thought some of our readers might be wondering what was happening at the creek. This is how things were looking early today. We have watched the creek all morning & it looks like it isn’t going to get up much more. I have barked at the water repeatedly and it seems to be working as the water hasn’t risen for the past 2 hours. The round metal object in our yard has been completely under water in the past and it doesn’t look like it will happen today.

As of 11:30 AM it looks like the rain has stopped. The bottom two photos on the right are looking downstream toward Marilyn Y’s cabin. She had started moving things upstairs, but as of now, it doesn’t look like her place will flood. Whew!

RAINY DAY LUNCH

Yesterday, Marilyn and Al took our cabin neighbor Marilyn Y. out to lunch at the Undercliff restaurant. Marilyn Y. had read about the restaurant in my Lucky Dog Blog story about Undercliff. M.& A. like to take people to this restaurant because of the unusual setting and good food.

They were going to go for dinner but because the rainy weather with more heavy rain expected, they decided to go for an late lunch instead.

It was raining when they got to the restaurant and the greeter dog was staying in out of the rain. When it rains, water seeps through the rocks of the bluff and gets into the restaurant. Just part of being at one with nature. Their waitress said that the rain had been so bad early in the day that the restaurant had to close down for a while. My little group was glad to find it was open when they got there.

They had a nice lunch with Al having a Santa Fe salad, Marilyn having Nachos and Marilyn Y. having Turkey/Cheese sandwich and fries. Marilyn Y. enjoyed her first trip to Undercliff and Al & Marilyn say it is consistently a great place to go for good food and atmosphere.

They said it was a nice way to spend a rainy day.

CAT BONDING

When there is nothing new to report around the Lucky Dog cabins there is always the cats.

The “Little Yellow Kitten” and CC are good friend. Note the size difference! CC is the guardian cat. He looks after all of the other ones and seems to get along best with Little Yellow. Busted and Cowboy are still at the hissing stage.

The “Little Yellow Kitten” is the Alpha Cat around the cabins and will chase and play with the other cats. It is a little surprising since he is so much smaller. Clearly he thinks all the special attention he got as a tiny baby has entitled him to be in charge.

“Little Yellow” is king of the cabins even when it comes to Brutus and me, Lucky. Won’t somebody please give him a good home?

FIRE

As Marilyn and Al came into town the other day, they saw some smoke. Al said, “Let’s drive toward it, we could use a story for the Lucky Dog Blog”. He said that in jest, but when they turned the corner they saw a house on fire.

They could not get any closer with all the emergency vehicles around but they did get a blog picture. It was an unoccupied house that was in very poor shape on East 5^th Street. Fortunately no one was hurt in the fire.

FALL FESTIVAL IN NEOSHO

Saturday morning was the all year school reunion in Pineville. Marilyn went to it (a graduate of 1958) and got so busy talking, that she forgot to take any photos. Some reporter she is.

Late Saturday afternoon Marilyn and Al went to the Neosho Fall Festival. There was food, arts and crafts for sale and music to enjoy.

There was a horse made out of sticks.and our cabin neighbor Marilyn Y. was there to sell of her Art Work.

There apparently was no room at the Festival for this reporter.

QUILTING AGAIN

Last Week Marilyn went to Bella Vista, AR to quilt with a friend at the club room at the Village Quilting store.

It is a beautiful store with lots and lots of fabric (Marilyn is a fabriholic) and other goodies that quilters love. She said she had a nice time. The other quilters were friendly and helpful. Pat, the owner, has a great sense of humor (note sign below). The quilt on display is a fund raising quilt for the local quilting guild. It was beautifully made.

The club room was spacious and very well equipped. A pleasant, non-toxic atmosphere – in other words something Marilyn has missed. When she came into the shop, the quilting machine (below, right) was humming along all by itself. It was a bit eerie to see something so complex happening without anyone about.

It will be interesting to this little black dog if she starts a quilting project around here at the cabin. Winter is coming. I could use a new napping quilt.
